2007 Course and Study Tour

University of Massachusetts Amherst

We are pleased to announce that the popular Chinese Culture and Business course will be offered again this spring (2007), with the tour of China tentatively scheduled for May 27 to June 9, 2007. The final dates will de-pend on the availability of flights and other arrangements. This 3-credit course is open to all SOM and Asian Studies students contingent on acceptance of your application to the program.

The course seminar will meet bi-weekly for 90 minutes, for a total of seven times over the semester. The course will be co-taught by Professor Zhongwei Shen of Asian Lan-guages and Literatures and Professor Jane Miller of the Isenberg School of Management. In addition to lectures and textbook readings, the course also requires a research paper on a Chinese business topic of interest to you.

The 2007 tour of China will include the famous cultural attractions (the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square , and Qin's terracotta army ) and several businesses where we will have the opportunity to interact with the organizations' managers. Students will also be allowed some free time for pursuing personal interests.

Space on the trip is very limited (maximum 16 students). The program fee is estimated to be $2,800-3,000 and includes airfare, lodging, ground transportation and admissions fees for cultural attractions. Students will be required to make a $500 deposit in mid-November and purchase airfare in early December. The balance of the program fee will be due in early February. Students will also be expected to obtain passports/visas, travel insurance and cover their personal food and entertainment expenses.
