The Town of Amherst
The Town of Amherst combines the tradition of a small
New England town with the cultural vitality of a major
center for higher education. Set among fertile farmlands
and a wooded hill, the town enjoys a cosmopolitan
atmosphere seldom found so close to the peace and beauty
of nature.Amherst is the home of
Amherst College and Hampshire College, as well as UMass
Amherst. During the academic year, the population
increases to approximately 34,000 with resident
students. Amherst has
an attractive downtown shopping area next to a large
tree-lined town common and many historic buildings. The
town center offers a full range of retail stores, and is
within easy walking distance of campus.
Local Attractions
The Pioneer Valley area of Massachusetts offers a wide
range of cultural, intellectual and entertainment
opportunities. In addition to the art galleries,
theaters and lecture series available on the University
of Massachusetts campus itself, the towns of Amherst,
Northampton, Hadley and South Hadley, all within 10
miles of the University, offer additional services.
Within these four towns are located all of the colleges
that make up the Five-College System. These colleges
(University of Massachusetts Amherst, Smith College,
Amherst College, Hampshire College and Mount Holyoke
College) expand the academic opportunities for students
and cultural opportunities for all. Through the
Five-College Program, students enrolled at UMASS can
take courses for credit at any of the other five
colleges. In addition, art museums, theaters and lecture
series at the other colleges expand the entertainment
options for visitors to the area.
Beyond these academic outlets, the area boasts many
interesting sites to visit, including the Emily
Dickinson House in Amherst, Old Deerfield Village in
Deerfield (north of Amherst), the Yankee Candle Company
in South Deerfield, the town of Northampton itself with
its downtown shopping district, and much more.
